The Basic Outline of Hajj

A basic guide to the days of Hajj and what needs to be done on which day.

Day 1, 8th of Dhul Hijjah
1. Make Ghusl
2. Enter into Ihram for Hajj
3. Perform 2 Rakah Nafil salah for Ihram
4. Make Niyaah for Hajj, read ‘Talbiah’ and keep reading as much as possible
5. You must reach Mina before Zuhr
6. Stay in Mina, perform Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha salah in Mina
7. You may shorten prayers but do not combine them


Day 2, 9th Dhul Hijjah
1. Perform Fajr salah in Mina
2. After sunrise proceed to Arafat
3. Keep reading ‘Talbiah’
4. Stay in Arafat until sunset
5. Perform salah of Zuhr and Asr on its time
6. You may shorten these prayers but not combine them
7. Leave Arafat, for Muzdalifah, after sunset without performing Maghrib salah
8. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined in Muzdalifah
9. Spend the night in Muzdalifah
10. Pick up 70 pea sized stones at Muzdalifah


Day 3, 10th Dhul Hijjah
1. Perform Fajr at Muzdalifah
2. Try to leave for Mina just before sunrise
3. Stone the Large pillar (of Shaytan) with seven stones, stop saying ‘Talbiah’
4. Slaughter sacrificial animal (Qurbani)
5. shave or cut hair
6. Remove Ihram and wear normal clothes
7. Go to Makkah-al-Mukkarramah
8. Perform Tawaaf and Sa’yee
9. Return to Mina and spend the night there


Day 4, 11th Dhul Hijjah
1. Stay at Mina
2. Stone all three pillars (of Shaytan) with 7 stones each, preferably between Zuhr and Maghrib, starting with the smallest and finishing with the largest.


Day 5, 12th Dhul Hijjah
1. Repeat the same procedure for stoning the pillars (of shaytan)
2. If you wish to leave for Makkah, you must do so before the sun sets
3. If staying in Mina, repeat the same procedure for stoning the pillars (of shaytan) on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah and then return to Makkah
4. Hajj is now complete

NOTE : Perform Tawaaf-al-Widdah before leaving for home
